E is the commonest letter in English prose: 6,501,327 of the 51,993,314 letters in the 111 public-domain books this site cuts its practice texts from — 12.50%, or once every 8. On a QWERTY keyboard it sits on the top row, so the left middle finger leaves the home row for it and has to come straight back. The pairs it turns up in most are ER (873,220), ED (557,463), EN (522,877) going out of it and HE (1,522,995), RE (690,162), TE (389,675) coming into it, so those are the two-key rolls worth getting smooth. In the course it arrives in lesson 6, the E and I keys.

Two-key rolls are what fast typing is made of: practise the pair, not the letter.
